Good music is a tradition at Northwestern State University. With a large variety of opportunities for musicians, that tradition continues to thrive year after year. In order to ensure that those opportunities are always available, the NSU School of Creative and Performing Arts created the
Band Enhancement Campaign. This campaign focuses on addressing the need for new uniforms and equipment for the NSU Band.
Though state funding covers many of the expenses required for the NSU Band to operate, items like uniforms and instruments are not covered in the yearly budget. As the NSU Band has grown and prospered over the years, so has the need for external support.
Did You Know?
- When the SON travels, it requires six 55-passenger chartered buses and a 26-foot rental truck to move the members of the band and their equipment
- At each away game, the 340-member band requires three meals a day and 88 hotel rooms
- After performances, it costs $1,800 for a single cleaning of the band uniforms
A contribution to the Band Enhancement Campaign not only supports the needs for the marching band, but also frees up funds for the entire School of Creative and Performing Arts. SON Pride
The Northwestern State University "Spirit of Northwestern" Demon Marching Band is truly the pride of NSU. With over 300 members, NSU boasts one of the largest and most diverse marching bands in the South, playing both traditional and contemporary styles of music to match their unique and inspiring formations. The demon band succeeds in delighting audiences performance after performance.
Band Facts
- The NSU SON has twice performed for the New Orleans Saints
- The NSU Wind Symphony was an invited performer at the College Band Director's South Regional Conference in Charlotte, NC
- The NSU Wind Symphony was the opening performer for the South Regional Band and Orchestra Conference in Monroe, LA
- The SON was invited to march in the 2008 "London, England New Year's Parade"
- The average GPA for all students in band at the end of 2006 was a 3.0, and the average ACT score was a 22
